Katharine Lawton Brown
Kathy has lived a life, continuously and joyously immersed in music. Her extraordinary musical background includes directing, singing and announcing, and has taken her from concert halls to theatres to recording studios all across the country and across the world.
Kathy’s directing experience extends to musicals, choral clinics, master classes, and ensembles of many varied descriptions. Her musicality, wit and positive attitude make her exceptionally easy to work with – and she believes in being pully, not pushy! For two years she had the great joy of serving as Associate Conductor of the Variety Children’s Chorus, conducting while they sang at Cardinals and Rams games, and even taking them to the White House to sing! As Artistic Director/Conductor of the St. Louis Women’s Chorale, she eagerly anticipates partnering with Maryville University in their endeavors to serve the St. Louis community.
Kathy brings a wealth of experience as a performing musician to her directing. Her extensive singing career has encompassed opera, oratorio, musical theatre, and even jazz! She has sung at St. Louis’ famed Muny Opera and was Principal Contralto and Soloist with the world renowned United States Air Force Band’s elite “Singing Sergeants.” She has performed for thousands of audiences throughout the USA and in Canada, as well as in China, and has appeared as soloist on national and international radio and TV. Kathy has been a guest artist with dozens of prominent orchestras and chamber ensembles, including the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Folger and 20th Century Consorts of Washington, DC, the Arianna String Quartet and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. She performs regularly with members of that orchestra as Principal and Soloist with the American Kantorei on their Bach at the Sem series.
Many St. Louisans will readily recognize Kathy’s voice, because she served on the announcing staff of KFUO-FM – Classic 99 for many years. She also appeared on several “From the Garden, Live” broadcasts – as both an artist and an announcer. Utterly comfortable onstage, she emcees local charity events, and narrates for musical ensembles.
In her personal life, Kathy is married to David M. Brown. Very active in veterans’ affairs, she was named Legionnaire of the Year by her Post in 2010. A Rotarian since 1990, she was honored with the “Four Avenues of Service Award” for her longstanding work with Rotary International. She and her dog, Diego, are a “TOUCH Therapy” team with Support Dogs, Inc., working with special-needs children.
Kathy holds a BA from Rollins College (FL) and an MM James Madison University (VA). She has taught (primarily) applied voice in colleges and universities in Virginia, Georgia, Illinois and Missouri. After moving to St. Louis, she taught at UMSL for 11 years, where she also directed their acclaimed classical chamber music series, Premiere Performances. Since 2007 she has served on the vocal faculty of Greenville College (IL), teaching others how to make their ‘joyful noise’ just a little less noisy and a little more relaxed and joyful!
